Completed
Łódź, Widzew

The client came with four versions of the design he had made himself and a clear vision of a light grey kitchen. Something still didn't click, so I proposed a bolder direction: dark matt units, an island open to the living room and more seats for guests. The flat's angular geometry I sometimes hid and sometimes turned into an asset.

02Starting point

What the clients came with

New-build, developer's standard · 60 m² · Łódź, Widzew. The main needs and problems the project started from.

  1. 01

A new-build flat the family wanted to fit out fully to their needs.

  2. 02

The client had his own versions of the design and a vision of an elegant light grey kitchen — but something didn't fit.

  3. 03

Very angular geometry: many angles, corners and an unusual room layout.

From survey to finished interior

The stages of the design and renovation, as they actually went.

  1. 01
Visualisation of the first version: a light grey high-gloss kitchen and a table with green chairs.

    The clients' version

A light grey high-gloss kitchen — just as the clients imagined it.

  2. 02
Visualisation of the second version: black matt kitchen, wooden island and a living room with a brick wall.

    My proposal

Dark matt, an island open to the living room and more seats at the table.

  3. 03
Bathroom visualisation with a freestanding bath and dark units.

    Bathroom and bedroom

After the kitchen, the clients asked me to do the bathroom, bedroom, hall and child's room.

  4. 04
Living and dining area in the evening: track lighting, table, island and a brick wall with a TV.

    Result

The living area as built — in the evening, with the lighting on.

05Decisions

Key design decisions

What I designed, and why that way.

01

Problem The clients weren't sure about the layout of the living room with the kitchen and dining area.

An island that joins kitchen and living room

I added an island with seats: you can cook, eat, have a coffee and watch TV with the rest of the household at the same time. The table took more chairs, as the clients love having guests.

02

Dark matt units

The space is open and the clients bold, so instead of light grey gloss I proposed dark matt with wood — with a loft feel. In the end we chose a navy so dark it's almost black: it links the kitchen with the navy panels in the bedroom and accents in other rooms.

03

Problem The flat was very angular — full of corners and odd angles.

Brick, curtains and light

Some angles I masked with brick and curtains, and where the layout was an asset, I brought it out with LED light.

04

A triangular mirror in the bathroom

Instead of fighting the bathroom's geometry, I drew attention away from it: a lit triangular mirror catches the eye from the doorway.

05

Problem The clients wanted a large bath, and the washer and dryer had to fit too.

Washing machine under the worktop

I planned plasterboard boxing and furniture so everything lines up: the washing machine sits under the basin worktop, with tall dark cabinets beside it.

Upholstered panels in the bedroom

Navy upholstered panels with copper strips and LED lighting — something special, in the colour the clients love.

07

A desk by the window

The owner works remotely, so he needed a large desk for calls. I designed the top so it folds away for cleaning the windows.

08

Problem A separate walk-in wardrobe didn't fit ergonomically — the doors clashed with everything else.

A large wardrobe instead of a walk-in

We went for a built-in wardrobe with plenty of storage.

06Materials

Materials and workmanship

What I chose, where it came from and what we kept.

  • Red brick wall with a TV and a wooden TV unit.

    Brick

A brick wall behind the TV — it masks the angles and gives the living area a loft feel.

  • Dark stone-pattern slab with blue veins, beside a wooden worktop.

    Dark stone-pattern slab

In the bathroom, behind the triangular mirror and in the niche above the toilet.

  • Wooden slats on the wall beside navy units and a white door.

    Wooden slats

By the entrance and next to the kitchen — a warm contrast to the navy and green walls.

Where it came from
Carpenter-made furniture, chain-store and online purchases, wallpapers and plasters to order.

The clients bought the flat in Łódź Widzew as a new-build shell and wanted every room to reflect their style and needs. The owner came to me with four versions of the design he had made himself in free software — with a colour scheme and even visualisations. I really liked his vision, but in the living area something still didn’t click.

I asked them to trust me. I swapped light grey gloss for dark matt with wood, changed the layout of the sofa and table, and extended the kitchen with an island where you can cook, eat and talk without losing touch with the living room. The clients were delighted and asked me to do the next rooms: bathroom, bedroom, hall and child’s room.

The geometry was the biggest challenge — plenty of angles and corners. Some I hid with brick, curtains and built-ins, and some I brought out with light. Have a new-build flat with an unusual layout? Let’s talk.

In the client's words

„That was a pleasure to work with Anhelina on really not easy project interior design of not standard geometry flat. What need to be highlight — very good contact with customer. She's listen you, so feel free to be open with your needs and requirements — for sure Anhelina will propose your dream, perfect design.”
